The key to balanced skin is to use both water and oil-based products in your skincare lineup.
Water is important to the skin because your cells need water to work properly. I can add as much hydration to my cells as I want, but if I don’t add a layer of oil on top, the water will evaporate. And quickly. Leaving you even more dehydrated than before. This is called Trans Epidermal Water Loss.
Trans Epidermal Water Loss (TEWL) can cause skin sensitivities, pre-mature aging and dehydration. If you notice your skin is flaky, most likely you are lacking hydration and any hydration you had is being pulled out by the climate you’re in. Oil can lock in the hydration and add moisture to the skin.
Hydation = Water Moisture = Oil Water + Oil = Balanced
PRO TIP: If an oil says it’s hydrating, it’s lying to you. It’s just a word used in marketing. Oil is NEVER hydrating, just as water is never moisturizing.
Being flaky also means your barrier function isn’t working properly. We can solve this by adding hydration to the skin and locking it in with moisture.
The Barrier Function is comprised of protective lipids (oils) to keep the hydration in the skin.
The best ways to keep your skin healthy is to always use a water-based product in conjunction with an oil-based product. Neither can live up to their full potential without the other.
