Toner is a word tossed around is skincare that doesn’t mean much to most people. It is a step that is often looked over and honestly before I studied skincare I sure as hell didn’t use a toner.
Astringent, tonics, fresheners, and hydrosol are all words that can be interchanged with toner. Everyone had the Proactive phase during middle school where step 2 was using an astringent to dry up and clear acne. The toners we talk about today are on the other end of the spectrum as far as how work for the skin.
Toners can be the solution for an array of different skin conditions.
Using a toner as a last step in your cleansing routine is a great option for making sure all the residue is off your face and it preps your skin for the next step. It can act as a PH Balancer, which is the balance of acidity and alkalinity in the skin. A toner will balance the skin back to neutral.
Hydration is another major reason many have started implementing toners into their routines. Ingredients like Rose water and Aloe are great to look for when you’re wanting to add a layer of hydration to your lineup. These kinds of ingredients will plump your skin and remove any flaking skin due to an imbalanced acid mantle.
To calm skin conditions like redness and sensitive skin is another great way to use Rose water and other mellow ingredients.
Astringents are toners that are good for oily and acne prone skin. The ingredients that are commonly found in astringents are witch hazel and AHA’s and BHA’s. These toners are usually anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and/or oil absorbing. They temporarily tighten your pores as well.
My favorite way to use a toner is for hydration. I will use the 7 Skin Method for an extra boost of hydration.
I always use a toner after I cleanse my face to balance my pH and to help spread the products I use evenly across my face. I use less of my products that follow my toner because they spread easier over my face. This saves me repurchasing products more often.
Toner also helps products that are put on after, absorb deeper into the skin, benefitting you more.
