There are a lot of terms when it comes to the Realm of Permanent Makeup. Many words are thrown around that mean that same thing. There is no set name for a single style so that makes things a little harder to understand. Let’s break it down.
Permanent Makeup refers to “cosmetic technique which employs tattoos as a means of producing designs that resemble makeup, such as” eyebrows “and other permanent enhancing colors to the skin of the face, lips, and eyelids.” (Definition Source: Wikipedia)
Permanent makeup is either done through using a rotary pen or using a manual tattoo method. PMU is a common abbreviation for Permanent makeup. Other names for permanent makeup include Micropigmentation or Cosmetic Tattooing.
From PMU stems different techniques such as Microblading, Ombre Brows, Powder Brows, Combo Brows, and Hairstroke Brows.
Microblading and Hairstroke Brows
The terms Microblading and Hairstroke brows are sometimes interchangeable, but I use those terms for completely different procedures. The results look almost identical, although they are produced using different tools. Microblading uses a manual tool to draw in individual hairs whereas Hairstroke brows uses a single needle to create hairs. Both techniques are the most natural form of PMU.
Ombre and Powder Brows
Ombre Brows and Powder brows are very similar. They are both done using a single needle. Ombre brows is more defined and filled in, while powder brows give a naturally filled in look. They are both done by using shading techniques. The ombre brow is a more intense and structured powder brow that has an outline.
A Combo Brow is made up of Ombre or Powder brows plus Microblading or Hairstroke Brows. A combo means a combination of individual hair strokes and shading together. This is a great way to match the density of your tattooed hair and natural hair for clients that have more hair in some areas than others. It’s also a good option for clients that want a more defined and filled in look.
